I can't tell you how excited I am to see TRADING MANNY come to fruition. It has been a labor of love since the idea first came to me in December, 2007. It's unlike any baseball book ever written, I think, an account of my father-and-son journey with middle son Joe, who at seven and eight years old asked simple questions that I couldn't answer: "Why did major-league baseball players take steroids?" "Weren't they going to be punished?" "Aren't steroids bad for you?"
To answer those questions, we sought out ballplayers and asked them point blank what was going on in baseball. We wrote to the Commissioner. We went to games at Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park. We talked to doctors about steroids, and to people who lost loved ones to steroid abuse. And we sought out the heart and soul of baseball by visiting Jackie Robinson's grave and the Idaho fields where the great Walter Johnson got his start.
Every parent who loves baseball and wants to pass it along to their child will love this book. Check my Excerpts page for more info on MANNY, and my blog for an up-to-date account of my journey in bringing it to publication.

"Jim brings to life the circular challenge of a parent who loves the game yet wrestles with the disappointment of the steroids era...a manifesto that has both raw honesty and fatherly tenderness." -- Doug Glanville, former MLB star, ESPN commentator and author of The Game From Where I Stand
"I salute you for giving your son a love of baseball. There is no nobler thing a dad can do." -- best-selling author Bill Bryson
"Trading Manny should be required reading for anybody associated with Major League Baseball, including players, managers, trainers, GM's, union leaders and, especially, the Commissioner." -- Mark Fainaru-Wada, journalist and author of Game of Shadows
"In Trading Manny, you'll find...that sometimes it takes a child's vision for adults to see clearly. Trading Manny helps us all through the tough times that all of us who love the game had to go through." -- Dale Murphy, 2-time NL MVP and founder of the I Won't Cheat foundation
"Funny, smart and heartaching...Seen through the piercing eyes of a 7-year-old and a father who share a grand passion for baseball and a disdain for cheating, who know the simple difference between right and wrong, truth and lies, baseball’s ‘Steroids Era’ is revealed as more than a stain on the game. It’s a blow to the American spirit, a betrayal of our deepest values, that reaches across generations.” -- Steve Wilstein, retired AP sportswriter who broke the story of Mark McGwire's PED use
"On a larger scale, TRADING MANNY raises another issue: Is it really a game any more if we who play must cheat to compete? This is a very satisfying read that anyone who plays or follows baseball would enjoy.” -- Dirk Hayhurst, MLB pitcher and author of The Bullpen Gospels and Out of My League
